Mauerpark in December is poetic

If you are in Berlin for Christmas, you should visit the Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmarkt in German, for the few inhabitants of Berlin who know German) and get drunk on Gluehwein. But if you are not a Christmas Market person at all… then I’ve the right option for you: Mauerpark in December.

As you may know, I’ve lived here in Berlin for the previous 6 months. Now it’s almost time to go back to my hometown, Milan (or maybe not? I’ve learned that in life you never know). I had a to-do list for saying goodbye to Berlin and visiting Mauerpark was in my list for sure.

What is Mauerpark

Mauerpark is a flea market located in Prenzlauer Berg Area. Everybody knows how Mauerpark is really cool during summer. On the open air stands you can shop all kinds of vintage stuff, design stuff, gadgets and clothes. There is a big arena where you can participate to the karaoke. Also there are many music bands and talented artists EVERYWHERE.

Mauerpark in December? Really?

Yes, Mauerpark in December is still cool, but not only that. It is completely a different experience than during the summer. It’s an immersion in the dark side of the city and in his creepy atmosphere. Of course it’s cold as f*** but you can easily solve this problem with the help of an hot cup of turkish mint tea. You can also find some Gluehwein there, if you still want to live the Christmas atmosphere (me I had an indigestion of Gluehwein so I can’t stand anymore even the smell…).

Mauerpark in December is creepy but also poetic

I went to the flea market for last time few days ago, the 17th December, around 4.00 pm. As you can see from my pictures, it gets dark really early during this season, so I’ve found the market enshrouded in darkness. But if you are afraid of the dark, no worries: in every stand there are trembling little lamps which illuminate the vintage and design objects for sale with a magic light. Also, the cold weather push people to search more human contact for finding a little warm. You can easily start a conversation with one of those peculiar and cool people who bring Mauerpark to life till the end of the year.

My last time in Mauerpark (for now) was really melancholic.

Here in the end I post a poetry that I’ve wrote months ago but I think it fits very well to this moment.

Innocence dressed in white
will never forget
The words you said that night.
~
Innocence dressed in gold
shines of tears
That you dry
For not getting cold.
~
Innocence dressed in black
Blends with the walls of the night
To disappear the better
From any faithful sight.

Thanks for riding my post and my poetry! Let me know if you like Mauerpark even in the winter.

Best,

Anna
